Route of our Sustainable Sailing Expedition from Palermo, Sicily, to Menorca, Balearic Islands

Sustainable Sailing Expedition in the Mediterranean:
from Palermo to Menorca

Join us onboard our Sustainable Sailing Expedition in the Mediterranean Sea, where we’ll sail from Palermo to Menorca! This is our 10th Expedition of 2022 and it is not the easiest one. That is why we would love to have pirates on board who have already sailed before. This trip is perfect for sailors wanting to build their mileage and gain more experience at sea while also becoming an active member of Pirates for Planet and building towards a more ocean-friendly future!

We will start in Palermo, the capital of Sicily. We will stay here one night before leaving on our big journey.

From Palermo we’ll sail to Trapani and from there, we’ll have to catch the right window of wind to cross the Tyrrhenian Sea to Sardinia. We have 175 nautical miles to sail, so about 35 hours of non-stop sailing.

In South Sardinia, we will either anchor if the wind allows us, or go to the port. We’ll sail to the islet of Sant’Antioco in the southwest of Sardinia. There we’ll have to prepare to cross 200 nautical miles to arrive in Menorca, the Balearic Islands. Our last night we’ll spend in the port of Mahón.

We are looking for dedicated pirate volunteers who share our mission, values and lifestyle! We also expect some sailing experience since we will be sailing at night and doing shifts. Volunteers with a particular background or interest in eco-activism, veganism, sustainability, ocean conservation, marine biology, filmmaking or photography are very appreciated!

Program Onboard

Drawing of Sailboat

Let’s go sailing, you will become part of our crew! Volunteers will be divided in two different teams and sail during different shifts, also at night. This is the perfect opportunity for sailors who want to gain more experience at sea!

Drawing of an anchor

Once arrived at a good spot, we drop our anchor and stay on board the boat or go on land with our little boat, the dinghy. We spend most time at sea but sometimes we’ll visit places on land or go to the harbour.

Get ready to be active! We cooperate as a crew and help with all tasks on board to keep the boat going: sailing, cooking, cleaning dishes, keeping deck and hull clean, and documenting our expedition.

Turtle caught in fishing net and trash

Let’s keep our expeditions ocean-friendly! That means all meals on board are vegan (gluten-free upon request) and we avoid buying packaged foods. We use only biodegradable products to not contaminate our seas with damaging chemicals.

The ultimate goal of joining our expeditions is to turn yourself into a fully trained PIRATE for PLANET! Every day, we’ll dedicate some time to group activities that are in line with our values and mission to promote change for a better planet.

Volunteers don’t pay a fixed contribution, but are expected to help onboard with all tasks and share in the costs of the expedition (see down below).

How to get there

How to get to Palermo

Departure on 3 September 2022 in Palermo

  • Please check sustainable forms of travel to reach our destination! Think of public transport such as train or bus, hitchhiking, blablacar, boat, ferry (not very sustainable… but better than airplane!) etc.
  • If you truly have no other options: Palermo has an international airport.

How to leave from Menorca

Arrival on 13 September 2022 in Menorca

  • Please check sustainable forms of travel to go back home! Think of public transport such as train or bus, blablacar, hitchhiking, ferry, boat, …
  • Only opt for airplane travel if you truly have no other options. Menorca has an international airport.
  • Check train/bus connections by searching on Google, Blablacar or Rome2Rio. Don’t worry, we help you find the best connection! Fill in the volunteer form or contact us for any questions.

Consider staying a few days longer after the end of the expedition or come a few days earlier, so you’re able to visit and explore Palermo or Menorca a bit more and make the most out of your travel. We will not have enough time to visit everything thoroughly and will mainly be focusing on sailing.
